Hippos are incredibly important animals in aquatic systems - especially large swamps like the Okavango where reeds grow quickly, blocking channels, building up silt and eventually damming the water. The vast bulk of these herbivores ensure that pathways through vegetation remain, other animals can still access these areas and that the system keeps flowing. Without hippos, the Okavango and other important water systems would change into something else entirely, likely leading to the loss of countless other species. #campaignforNature #importanceofhippos #keystonespecies #everythingislinked #ecosystems #beverlyjoubertfineart.

play_circle_filled The future of our continent’s most iconic species is hanging in the balance – and time is running out to save them. This #EndangeredSpeciesDay is an important opportunity to raise awareness and take action – but also to reflect on the conservation successes we’ve been able to achieve with your support. We can do so much good when we work together towards a common goal. #endangeredspecies #conservation #thereisnoplanetb #extinctionisforever #nature #wildlife #greatplainsconservation Repost @greatplainsconservation.

When the night comes, it belongs to the hyaenas who will sing, hunt and scavenge under the cover of darkness - and they’re exceptionally good at all three. #spottedhyaena #hyena #silhouette #maasaimara.

It was back in January when we watched this tiny cub battle with a pride that she’d accidentally stumbled into with her brother. Against all odds she fought on and was eventually accepted as one of the pride’s own, behavior that we’d never seen before. It seems that she may have used another of her 9 lives over the past 2 weeks. After straggling, she lost her new pride and spent the last fortnight searching for them. She’s much bigger than in this picture but is nowhere near old enough to look after herself, and yet somehow she managed. We’ve just heard that she has once again reunited with her adoptive pride who went in search of her. Hopefully she’s learned a valuable lesson. We’ve certainly learnt a great deal about lions’ bonds - even connecting with a wandering cub who is not their own. #lostcub #twicelost #okavangolions #closecall.

Living dinosaurs. Those reptilian eyes are hard to read but water monitors generally have food on their minds. They’re very fond of crocodile eggs but often fall prey to crocodiles themselves. Their own eggs are laid inside living termite mounds; their strong claws helping them to break through the hard outer shell of the insects’ home. The termites seal the broken walls of their mound, leaving the atmosphere perfectly regulated and the eggs as safe as can be. #watermonitor #reptilesofinstagram.

Basking in a sun that is losing its summer heat, this little lion has found the perfect spot for a snooze - as long as his playful siblings don’t creep up behind him in ambush... #littlebigcats #selindareserve #thisismytrophy #sleepinglion.

Life in the Zambezi- a massive river with a healthy population of crocodiles and hippos. The two volatile species get along with surprisingly few altercations considering the carnivorous nature of crocs. But hippos are not strangers to conflict and their massive size, huge incisors and high levels of aggression make them an unlikely prey candidate for any predator - even one who shares the water with them. Most will leave them to fight their own battles - and perhaps they may get the spoils when a particularly ferocious battle between hippos ends permanently for one individual. #zambezi #zimbabwe #hippos.

An unlucky end for a frog but an absolute feast for this woodland kingfisher who would usually make do with grasshoppers. The battle for survival plays out continuously in every tropic level. #circleoflife #woodlandkingfisher #birdingbotswana.

Rhino poaching continues to negatively impact rhino populations - particularly in South Africa where around two animals are killed for their horns every day. This is one of 87 rhinos that have been moved to safety from poaching hotspots by #rhinoswithoutborders. Thirteen more are due to be moved when conditions are right, to meet the goal of 100 animals. The transloacted rhinos have settled into their new homes incredibly well and are healthy and breeding, strengthening these new small populations and bringing a ray of hope into their future survival.

A trio of red lechwe males, silhouetted against a fiery Okavango sky. The lechwe population at Duba Plains has risen phenomenally in the decade that we've taken management of the concession. There were around a thousand lechwe ten years ago, and today we're in the region of 10 000. These higher antelope numbers have meant that more predators can be supported on this island. While territory is always important, a lion pride can do very well here without the need to cover enormous areas or rely largely on the buffalo herds that move through seasonally. #redlechwe #okavango #DubaPlains #linkedecosystem.
