Another Rajan photo to hopefully make you smile this Friday. This time it’s to announce the release of the new special edition of this image at @lumas_gallery. This print is now available online and at Lumas galleries around the world. Follow the link in my bio for more info. @gitzoinspires #zbyhp #happyfriday #rajan #rip #asianelephants #elephants

For those of you who don’t know Rajan’s story, he was a 66 year old Asian elephant that was brought to the Andaman Islands for logging in the 1950’s. He along with a small group of 10 elephants were brutally forced to learn how to swim in the ocean so that they could bring the logged trees to nearby boats and then eventually swim on to the next island. When logging became banned in 2002 Rajan was out of a job. He was living out his retirement days on one of the islands where I photographed him. Rajan was the last of this group to survive and unfortunately passed away in 2016.😢.

Happy International Women’s Day! Through my travels, I am often inspired by the women I meet along the way. Strong, wise women who step outside societal norms and expectations to live their lives on their own terms with dignity, grace, and self-respect. To all those amazing women out there, who keep inspiring me and those around them every day to keep pushing forward to realize their dreams, kick ass and change the narrative! @gitzoinspires #zbyhp #mom #happyinternationalwomensday.

I have never associated @HP with sustainability. When I became one of the #zbyhp ambassadors, I asked them about what @HP does for the environment. They told me that sustainable impact was fundamental to the company’s core values and I received back a report listing all the awards, actions, programs and results they have taken to try to be a more sustainable company. I was completely surprised and impressed on what they have done so far and what they hope to achieve in the future. This year, I’m excited to work and share some stories of how and what @HP is doing in their sustainability efforts. Stay tuned! #zbyhp #companiesthatkickass #sustainability.

Having lived at sea for so many years, I have witnessed how coastal communities around the world depend on the ocean every day and how it plays a critical role in their survival. Sadly, as we all know, they are on the front lines of the impacts of climate change and it is sad to see their traditional ways, identities, and livelihoods under threat. But the health of the oceans affects us all and it is now more important than ever to make small changes in our everyday lives to reduce our carbon footprints. One thing I have done that has been an easy change has been to stop buying beef from the store. When I’m at a restaurant it’s been easy to make an alternative choice. Some scientist's say eating less red meat would be a better way for people to cut carbon emissions than giving up their cars. If we all make small changes, we can make a large impact. What easy changes have you made? Please share! @sealegacy @gitzoinspires #zbyhp @leica_camera @leicacamerausa #ocean #conservation #turningthetide #SDG14 #sealegacy.

A family portrait in a place I can’t quite forget. Lavanono, Madagascar, the most primitive place I have ever seen. Tiny mud shacks sturdied with wooden poles are surrounded by cactus and sand for as far as the eye can see. There is no power, running water, or any “modern” convenience or material of any kind except what is washed up on the beach. This young girl was boiling the cactus you see behind them for food and the wagon was filled with raw meat from one of their goats. When I feel like the modern world tries to convince me I need to buy more stuff, places like this remind me that I don’t. @gitzoinspires #zbyhp #livesimply #madagascar #travel.

Photo by @amivitale // Happy World Wildlife Day! Want to do something good for wildlife today? My friend @amivitale is offering this incredible opportunity through Omaze. Here are the details:
Repost from @amivitale // Donate $10 and you will automatically be entered to win a visit to this sublime place called Ol Pejeta Conservancy (@olpejeta) where the last two northern white rhinos in the world live. (Link in profile.) Here, Wildlife Keeper Zacharia Mutai comforts an orphaned southern white rhino at Ol Pejeta (@olpejeta) in Kenya. At the end of the 19th century, southern white rhino were on the brink of extinction with only one small population of 20-50 animals remaining in South Africa. Today, thanks to one of the most successful collective conservation efforts of the century, there are now thriving populations in east and southern Africa and there are now 20,000 of these amazing creatures. Despite this rebound, poaching remains a massive threat to all rhinos and each individual is carefully cared for and guarded.

In a world of 7 billion, we need to start recognizing that we are not separate from nature. When we see ourselves as part of nature, then saving nature is really about saving ourselves. Help support @olpejeta today and maybe even win a trip there yourself with me at omaze.com/rhinos.
