She is a big and beautiful tiger shark. Last week we peacefully experienced six species of Bahamian sharks however I stared in awe and appreciation every time this 14-foot tiger came around. Thanks @cristinamittermeier for lending me your #Sony camera for this one. Thanks for the amazing trip @jonmccormackphoto and @bradleyphotographic. For @sealegacy with @ryantidman and @sharkmanconnor and @sharkl0ve @sonyalpha.

Photograph by @bradleyphotographic. She is a massive Great Hammerhead shark and our @sealegacy team was with her just 24 hours ago. Every time I saw her break the visibility barrier and approach me, I was in complete awe of her. She is tall, long, wide, thick, gorgeous, powerful and she moves with such confidence and grace that I had a hard time concentrating on filming as I could not take my eyes off of her. The locals call her Queen and I can’t think of a better name. This shark and her habitat need enforced protection. #bahamas #gratitude #love #beauty #nature Thank you @jonmccormackphoto.

I love being surrounded by big sharks. It is a sign of a healthy ecosystem. As many shark populations around the world have all but collapsed due to overfishing, this was a refreshing sight. My friend, Jason Bradley (@bradleyphotographic) grabbed this shot of me photographing and filming Bahamian sharks this week. I can’t wait to share the images, footage and stories with you, however, we are getting on another boat tomorrow morning to keep shooting in the Bahamas. In this picture you see me filming a tiger shark while lemon sharks, a great hammerhead and a Caribbean reef shark pass by. Shot #onassignment for @sealegacy with @cristinamittermeier and @ryantidman #Queenthehammerhead.

Photo by @FransLanting The Asiatic cheetah is facing a death sentence. Fewer than 50 survive—and only in Iran. But some of the best people dedicated to saving these unique cats from extinction are now in jail for their work and may even face the death penalty. They’ve been accused of using camera traps for espionage. But camera traps are only good for one thing—to capture images of animals at close range just like you see here. This rare image of a cheetah in Iran was captured by one of my camera traps while on assignment for @NatGeo. I worked there with permission and support of Iran’s Department of Environment, and with several of the excellent Iranian scientists who have been arrested. They belong to the Persian Wildlife Heritage Foundation, but they worked closely with the government, and yet they are now on trial—for charges that are politically motivated. This is horrible for the individuals involved, but it is also a tragedy for the animal which faces extinction. And that is a great loss for everyone in Iran because the Asiatic cheetah is a powerful symbol for Iran’s unique natural heritage.
If you care about cheetahs in Asia and the plight of the people whose mission is to protect them, please go to the link in my Instagram profile to read the story NatGeo just published and spread the word about it. You can also sign a petition to express your concern at Care2. Search for “conservationists face death penalty in Iran.

Entering the territory of elephant seal bulls requires deep respect and calm movements. These are the largest of all seals, with males weighing up to 8,800 pounds. During breeding season, they can be very aggressive. However, my encounter with this sleepy male was quite relaxed, as he lay motionless for hours under cloudy skies in Fortuna Bay. Luckily, this gave me the opportunity to get creative and craft this unusual shot..

Airguns used in seismic surveys blast the ocean floor with acoustic vibrations - shockwaves of sound that feed back information about the ocean floor, showing oil companies where to drill.
An oil rig in the ocean is dangerous enough to marine life on its own. Research has shown that the intense and constant noise created by seismic testing can also cause significant damage to marine life, including mammals like these orca. Since 2001, the pristine Lofoten region in northern Norway has been protected by a temporary ban on oil activity, which has been successfully renewed six times with support from local communities, municipal governments and sustainable fisheries.

On April 7, Norway’s Labour Party @arbeiderpartiet will decide if it supports permanent protection for this region from oil exploration. Tell them that protecting Lofoten is absolutely the right thing to do - for Norway, for the oceans, for our future. Sign the petition (link in bio) & light a beacon of solidarity with us. #OilFreeLofoten.

While photographing a different polar bear, I turned around and found this bear walking off with my tripod. Two things are wrong with this picture: she is eating my very expensive tripod at the beginning of an assignment, and I never want a predator to associate my presence with food. This is paramount. Luckily, the bear realized that it was of no nutritional value and she left me with a slobber-covered piece of equipment.

A group of gentoo penguins prepares to dive into frigid waters to feed. The intertidal zone is a shared space, between both predator and prey, and both are always on high alert, doing their best to eat and survive. Life above and below the water is very different, and yet it is so connected. I love split-shot photographs because they emulate this idea. #penguins #wildlife #nature #photography.

When we openly tell the world that we must fight to keep oil out of the fjords of northern Norway, this is the image that runs through my mind. I have never witnessed such a moment of power, grace, intelligence and fragility all at once. This image is also in my new book “Born To Ice”. I am getting so many DM’s from frustrated followers asking about when Born To Ice will be reprinted. Trust me, no one is more sad than I am about the publisher running out of books around Christmas time. I guess the good news is that it is being well received. The better news is that there will be a massive print run in the coming months. As a reminder, I still have a few limited edition versions on my website. paulnicklen.com. #naturesart #orca #oilfreelofoten #gratitude.

Today, I'm lighting a beacon of solidarity with Norway and @Folkeaksjonen for an #OilFreeLofoten.

Being off the coast of Northern Norway in the beautiful fjords is unlike anything else. Imagine the deep blue sea running into the Yosemite Valley, and that valley in Yosemite is full of orcas and humpback whales and fin whales and sperm whales. Millions of pounds of herring fill these fjords. That is what you have here. But this place is as fragile as it is beautiful.
Since 2001, this remote corner of Norway has been protected by a temporary ban on oil activity. The ban has been successfully renewed six times with relentless support from local communities, municipalities, sustainable fisheries and you, an international voice. We're here to shine a light on this local issue and make it a global issue once more.
On April 7, Norway’s Labour Party @arbeiderpartiet will decide if this region deserves permanent protection from oil exploration. Help me tell them that protecting Lofoten is absolutely the right thing to do - for Norway, for the oceans, for our future.

play_circle_filled Thirty years ago, the marine ecosystem off the coast of Norway’s Lofoten islands almost collapsed from overfishing. Today, it’s one of the richest marine habitats in the world, with a huge sustainable fishery and tourism industry, and massive cetacean populations. There’s no other place in the world like it.

But this region is at risk again - this time from petroleum development.

The oil industry has vied for a stake in these Arctic waters for twenty years. But they have met resistance at every turn, and the Lofoten Islands have remained protected under temporary bans on petroleum activity since 2001.

SeaLegacy stood with Norway in 2017 to support the latest temporary ban. Now, alongside our partners @Folkeaksjonen, we are urging the Norwegian Labour Party (@arbeiderpartiet) to support permanent protection for this region. Let’s establish an #OilFreeLofoten today.

This is Norway’s chance to stand on the right side of history and become a shining beacon of hope for the world.

I am in Phoenix to speak tomorrow night at the Arizona Speaker Series. Very surreal to see my frozen mug among such inspiring humans. I think they put me in the lineup to act like a palette cleanser for these heavyweights. #humbled and #excited to present tomorrow night to 4600 wonderful people about art, science and conservation. I am going to bring you on a journey with me to the ends of the Earth and there will be some laughter, some tears and even some cringing. But, most importantly I am confident everyone will leave caring a little deeper for this great but ailing planet of ours. #speaking.
