Math. Ugh. That stuff feels like the bane of my existence and this kid feels the same! ⠀
▪️⠀
I used to force him to do homework (and life) in a very specific way. ⠀
▪️⠀
I had this idea of what success in parenting looked like. ⠀
▪️⠀
You know the story...⠀
It meant my kids did all the things. ⠀
They played sports. ⠀
They got straight A’s. ⠀
They played an instrument. ⠀
They danced and did tumbling.⠀
They had amazing friends and participated in church functions... ⠀
AND they did all of it with joy and excitement!! ⠀
▪️⠀
Funny thing was they didn’t (and don’t) find joy or excitement in most of those things. ⠀
▪️▪️⠀
So you know what I did? I fought those darn kids on it for a looooong time because I just knew that if I didn’t produce academically successful athletes then I really had no business pro-creating. ⠀
▪️⠀
You guys, the fear was real. ⠀
▪️⠀
What would other people think of me as a parent? I mean, my peers might figure out that I have NO idea what I’m doing and they’ll judge my lack of parenting skills. They’ll talk about it behind my back and smile sweetly to my face. ⠀
🤭⠀
Then ⠀
I had an awakening of sorts. ⠀
I began to question the paradigm of parenting I had bought into and that was creating basket-cases out of my family and I.⠀⠀
I wondered why I was putting the mental health of my family second to other people’s opinions.⠀
▪️⠀
I began to get really clear about what was important to ME and mine.⠀
⠀
👉🏼What kind of a mother do I want to be? What kind of a family culture do I want to create? What values and ideals are important to me to teach my children? ⠀
AND⠀
What does that 👆🏼👆🏼look like in my every day life?
How can I create this in my family and myself? ▪️⠀
I’m not perfect at parenting, obvi, who is? But I have so much less stress around it because NOW I I am pretty dang clear on who I want to be and what I think is important for my kids to learn. ⠀
⠀
And loves... this has made a world of difference.⠀
⠀
Drop the stories about who you “should” be and what successful parenting “should” look like. Stop shoulding on yourself and practice a little compassion! ⠀
⠀
Get clear on what’s important to you and get to creating THAT. ⠀
⠀.

I wanted to share this book for anyone who is interested in learning more about mindfulness and thought work. 💡Get this book! You can be happy AND suffer from anxiety. You can be happy AND struggle with your kids. You can be happy AND ______________.
But how? This books explains how to accept what is and then decide how you want to respond. Responding VS Reacting.
Happiness is available to everyone. It lives within us. It doesn’t come from being “perfect”, or having a closet full of clothes. (It’s true!)
And the ironic thing is, once I learned this, I became happier with myself AND everyone around me. I have more compassion for myself and others. We are all doing the best we can.
There are great resources online regarding ACT therapy. The author of this book, Russ Harris, has great free resources as well.

Found this quote and I love it!!! We are always looking to something outside of us (Botox) to find happiness and change. What if we had it inside us already?
Happiness is available all the time
Happiness is a choice
So let’s inject our brain with happy thoughts. What are you thinking? Share below your happy thoughts. Let’s make everyone’s day a little better..

There was a talk I heard once from Elder Russell T. Osguthorpe where he said, “What if our only motive were love? What if everything we did, we did out of love?” There are all kinds of motives out there. And many of them are not pretty. We might be motivated by revenge or envy or greed. Selfish motives are abundant…Motives matter. They matter a lot. In the end, why we do things is probably more important than what we do… And one of the purest motives of all is love.” When I am motivated by love my WHY and WHAT are in alignment. Instead of getting angry at a family member and walking away or storming away probably would be more accurate what if I were motivated by love? What would love do in this situation? What would love think? How would it feel to access love in this moment? Love might still choose to walk away, pretty sure it wouldn’t be storming away then but my WHY I’m choosing to do WHAT I’m doing are in alignment with my best self.

Imagine how differently your life would be if you only ever operated and were motivated by love. What would that look like for you? How differently do you think you’d feel? Love is always available to you. It’s there if you want it. Are you willing to drop the conditions, to drop the NEED for others to be a certain way for you to access love? For you to feel loving? For you to be motivated by love?

One of my favorite thoughts to think is, “and I love them anyway.” When people do things I don’t agree with I just think, “and I love them anyway”

Try it. It feels so good. It feels way better than feeling judgement. It feels way better than holding conditions over them blocking only YOU from feeling loving. It doesn’t drop the WANTING them to do something but it does drop the NEEDING them to do something so you can feel loving. You just choose to feel love.

They showed up two hours late to family dinner – and I love them anyway.
When they’re cranky and giving you the cold shoulder – and I love them anyway.

Such powerful words.
