Jonathan M. Downie M.D., Ph.D. 👨‍⚕️👨‍🔬
After nine long years, today I graduated from @uofumedicine. Words can’t describe how overjoyed I am 😊 So much has changed since I started medical school. I found my calling in Internal Medicine and genetics. I made new incredible friends who made this journey so special. Relationships were made and relationships were lost. I was diagnosed with leukemia and went on to be 4+ years in remission. None of this would have been possible without the love and support of my parents, family, friends, mentors, doctors and coaches. Thank you for always standing by me even when things got hard and for allowing me to take care of those in need. Next up... residency in Boston!

The hippocampi are seahorse shaped structures in our brain that are critically involved in our ability to create/store memories and learn! Among the many connections to the hippocampus there are two areas in the brain that help the hippocampus form accurate memories. These areas, known as the medial and lateral entorhinal cortex, help us understand where we are in space (spatial recognition) and recognize objects (object recognition), respectively. You can imagine how knowing where you are (for example like knowing if you’re in your bedroom vs a classroom) and being able to recognize objects (for example like knowing whether you’re sitting on your bed or sitting on a desk) will help you form accurate memories of events and will help you behave appropriately according to the setting you’re in! I currently joined a lab where we are interested in seeing how silencing these two inputs into the hippocampus affects our memory and our ability to learn tasks! Speaking of memory, what kind of memory do you think you’re the worse at? I can never remember people’s names 🤪😳.

We had such an amazing time at our annual MD-PhD retreat! This year our retreat was in Vermont. Skiing and science, couldn’t get better! We had guest faculty from both our own institution and other institutions give talks on their research as well as fellow MD-PhD students in their PhD years. It was so inspiring and interesting to hear about the amazing things everyone was researching and how passionate they are about their topic! Made us even more excited to start our PhD!.

Spirit and the Ancestors are great! I am incredibly humbled to match to my number 1 choice and continue to evolve as a part of the @yale psychiatry family as both a resident and scientist. The AZA lab will be actively recruiting individuals who are passionate about neuroscience, social justice, and redefining scientific culture. Positions are limited. Contact me if interested. Thanks to @women.doing.science for the feature in women in medicine week! Check out their awesome account

Posted @withrepost • @women.doing.science @katemasiuk is an MD/PhD student at UCLA and works with a team of scientists and clinicians to develop new gene therapies for genetic blood diseases. Gene therapy offers a new option to patients with genetic blood diseases who might otherwise undergo a stem cell transplant from an outside donor - in this approach, Kate's lab collects diseased stem cells from the patients, uses either lentiviral vectors or CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology to add back or fix a mutated gene, and then transplants the patient with their own healthy stem cells. For her PhD thesis, Kate developed a new therapy which uses lentiviral vectors to modify stem cells and treat a genetic form of autoimmunity called IPEX syndrome. In this picture, Kate is culturing human bone marrow stem cells which will be modified to fix the autoimmune genetic defect. Kate pursued a dual MD/PhD degree because she wanted to directly use science to cure diseases, and hopes to work at the intersection of science and medicine in her future career.

Make a list of questions that you would like to ask during the interview. Pick questions that will demonstrate your interest in the job and the company. .

This might include commenting on the news you learned from the company website, and then asking a question related to it. Also ask questions about the job you will be expected to perform, like:
⠀⠀
1. What are the day-to-day responsibilities of this job?

2. How will my responsibilities and performance be measured? By whom?

3. Could you explain your organizational structure?

4. What computer equipment and software do you use?

5. What is the organization's plan for the next five years?
